The University Observatory was established in 1875 to provide teaching and research facilities for Oxford's Savilian Professor of Astronomy. The professors until 1930 were Charles Pritchard and then H.H. Turner, and the principal assistant for much of this period was F.A. Bellamy. Positional and photographic astronomy, seismology, and international collaboration were among the activities of the Observatory.
