Shirley Wheeler Smith was born May 3, 1875 in Nashville, Michigan. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1897. He was an instructor in English from 1898 to 1901 at which time he was appointed secretary of the Michigan Alumni Association and editor of the Michigan Alumnus . He was named secretary of the University of Michigan by the Board of Regents in 1908 after working for four years as assistant in the president's office of the Fidelity Mutual Life Insurance Co. In 1927, Smith became secretary and business manager combined. In the 1930 administrative reorganization of the University, Smith was named vice-president and secretary, in which position he supervised all of the financial and business affairs of the University. He retired in 1945 devoting himself to scholarly interests that included biographies of U-M presidents James B. Angell and Harry B. Hutchins.
