Elijah K. Hubbard was born in Middletown, CT, and attended school in West Haven, CT. From May 1826 until August 1827, he attended the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy (forerunner of Norwich University), which was then located in Middletown, CT. After leaving the Academy, Hubbard studied law at Yale University until 1830. In 1831, he enrolled in Middlebury College and received his degree from that institution in 1832. In 1834, Hubbard married Elizabeth De Koven of Middletown, CT, and shortly thereafter the couple moved to Chicago. Elijah Hubbard was a successful dealer in real estate and chartered the Galena and Chicago Railroad, the first railroad built west of Chicago.
