Henry Melvin Hart, Jr. was born on December 25, 1904 in Butte, Montana to Henry Melvin and Mary (Tyson) Hart. He earned an A.B. summa cum laude from Harvard College in 1926; an LL.B. magna cum laude in 1930; an S.J.D. in 1931; and an LL.D. from Columbia University in 1954.
He married Mary Jane White on December 3, 1932, with whom he had 1 daughter, Elizabeth Tyson.
He was admitted to the Washington, D.C. Bar in 1939 and served as a law clerk to Justice Brandeis on the U.S. Supreme Court from 1931-1932. From 1932-1937, he joined Harvard Law School as an Assistant Professor, then as Professor from 1937-1969. He served as the Dane Professor of Law from 1960-1969.
He was also a practicing attorney, serving as the Head Attorney with Office of U.S. Solicitor General from 1937-1938; as Special Assistant to Immigration and Naturalization Service for the U.S. Attorney General's Office from 1940-1941; as Associate General Counsel to the Office of Price Administration from 1942-1945; and as General Counsel to the Office of Economic Stabilization from 1945-1946.
In 1947, he received a Presidential Certificate of Merit and, from 1954-1955, served as the Julius Stone Visiting Professor at Ohio State University. In 1963, he authored The Federal Courts and the Federal System with Herbert Wechsler.
He died on March 24, 1969.
