U.S. civil engineer. One of seven children of General Montgomery C. (1816-1892) and Louisa (Rodgers) Meigs. Studied at Lawrence Scientific School of Harvard University and Royal Polytechnical School at Stuttgart, Germany. Resident engineer on surveys for Northern Pacific Railroad Company, 1870-1873. From 1874 employed on improvements of Mississippi River from St. Paul to mouth of Missouri River. Married Grace C. Lynde in 1877; parents of six daughters. From 1882 until retirement in 1926, in Keokuk, Iowa, in charge of U.S. Des Moines Rapids Canal--supervision over all Mississippi River work and its navigation facilities between Burlington, Iowa, and Hannibal, Missouri. Also local engineer for U.S. in construction of Mississippi River Power Company's power plant, lock, and dry dock at foot of Des Moines Rapids, 1910-1913.
