The National Society Southern Dames of America was formed in 1963 with chapters or Societies from each state. It was composed of women of southern ancestry who wanted to pursue "patriotic, educational and historical" interests. It supports charitable activities, particularly the Eye Bank, provides scholarships in southern universities, and encourages historic preservation. Membership is by invitation only.
