Samuel Haughton was born in Carlow in 1821. Educated at Carlow and Trinity College Dublin he was ordained deacon in 1846 and priest in 1847. His work in mathematical physics was complemented with a keen interest in geology and he was appointed professor of geology in the university of Dublin. He died in 1897
