Briggs, L. Vernon (Lloyd Vernon), 1863-1941
Variant namesBriggs (Medical College of Virginia, M.D. 1899) practiced medicine in Boston, Mass. and was instrumental in founding the Boston Psychopathic Hospital and Metropolitan State Hospital. His great interest was forensic psychiatry. The so-called "Briggs Law" of Massachusetts can be credited to his influence; this provides for a mental examination before trial of all persons indicted for a felony in the state.

Lloyd Vernon Briggs (1863-1941), American psychiatrist and Massachusetts genealogist. In addition to numerous works on psychiatry, he was the author of The church and cemetery records of Hanover, Mass. (Boston, Mass., Wallace Spooner, 1895-1904), History and genealogy of the Cabot family, 1475-1927 (Boston, C.E. Goodspeed & co., 1927), History and genealogy of the Briggs family, 1254-1937 (Boston, C. E. Goodspeed & co., 1938), and other works.

Biographical note: Journalist and author; Lloyd Vernon Briggs traveled through Arizona in the early 1880s as a correspondent for the Boston Transcript and visited again in 1891. He wrote several books about his family genealogy and his travels in the Southwest and Mexico.
