David Dodds Henry was born October 21, 1905, in East McKeesport, PA. He attended Pennsylvania State College receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in the arts and letters curriculum in 1926. Following his graduation, he was appointed an instructor at the College and in 1927 was awarded a Master of Arts degree with a major in English. In 1929 he was appointed professor of English and head of the English Department at Battle Creek College, Michigan, and held this position until 1933. In 1931, he was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree with a major in English literature from Pennsylvania State College. From 1933 to 1934, he was Assistant Superintendent of Public Instruction for the State of Michigan. In 1945, he was named president of Wayne University. He died at the age of 89 in Naples, Florida, in 1995.
