Samuel Lord (1774-1851) was the son of Lt. Tobias Lord (1749-1808), married Hannah Jefferds (1775-1816) of Wells, Me., and was a partner with his father in the West India trade in Kennebunk, Me. Samuel became a wealthy shipbuilder but suffered great losses at the hands of French privateers, which forced him to close his business and move to New York City in 1826. He entered the mercantile trade there dealing in coffee, cotton, dry goods, and wholesale groceries. His son, Samuel Jr. (1806-1841) joined him in partnership, while his son, Frederick (1808-1833) worked for them. As for his three other children, John (1803-1835) and William Henry (1810-1835), became seamen out of Kennebunk, while Tobias 4th (1813-1839) remained in school in Massachusetts.
