Florence Richardson Wyckoff was born in Berkeley, California, in 1905, daughter of Leon Josiah Richardson, a professor of Latin and director of the Extension Division of the University of California. She graduated from UC Berkeley in 1926, with a B.A. in art (sculpture). While traveling in Europe she studied with Hans Hofmann in Munich. In 1931 she married Hubert C. Wyckoff, Jr., an attorney and labor leader. She worked on reforms in farm labor, rural poverty, health insurance, and migrant children education.
