John P. Morton of Lexington, Kentucky, worked as a clerk in the bookstore of W.W. Worsley. When Worsley moved his store to Louisville in 1825, Morton went with him, becoming manager of the store the following year. Between 1832 and 1838 the firm was known as Morton and Smith. It was during this time that the firm began publishing textbooks. Henry A. Griswold joined the firm in 1838. From 1838 the company was known as Morton and Griswold.
