Avinash Chandra was born in 1931 in Simla, India. After studying painting and teaching in New Dehli he moved to London in 1956. He went on to exhibit across Europe including several UK cities. Initially a landscape painter, specialising in depicting Indian towns, his preoccupations developed into an interest in female nudes and later in murals. His work is held in several national collections including the Tate Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Musee d’Art Moderne, Paris. He died in 1991.

1947-1952 studied painting at Delhi Polytechnic; 1953-1956 taught at Delhi Polytechnic; 1954 awarded a prize in the First National Exhibition of Art, New Delhi; 1957 one-man exhibition at Imperial Institute, London; 1965 John D. Rockefeller 3rd Fund Fellowship
