John Blake Dale, son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Lincoln) Dale, b. 5 May 1813 Springfield, MA. He joined the U.S. Navy 2 Feb 1829 as midshipman and became lieutenant 25 Feb 1845. He married Jane Ann Hutchins Hales in 1840. He served on the Porpoise in the U.S. Exploring Expedition of 1838-1842 under Charles Wilkes and was unjustly relieved of duty for incompetence in 1839. Dale continued serving in the Navy until his death from disease 24 July 1848 near Beirut, Syria.
