Samuel Colcord Bartlett was the eighth president of Dartmouth College (1877 to 1892). He was born in Salisbury (NH) and graduated from Dartmouth in 1836 and from Andover Theological Seminary in 1842. He received his DD in 1861 and his LL D in 1877. He was professor of philosophy and rhetoric at Adelbert College and later at Case Western Reserve; professor of biblical literature and sacred theology at the Chicago Theological Seminary; and lecturer on the Bible at Dartmouth after his resignation as president. He served as pastor of the Franklin Street Church in Manchester (NH) the New England Congregational Church in Chicago (IL). He died in Hanover (NH) in 1898. Bartlett's first wife, Laura Bradlee Bartlett, died in 1843. His second wife, Mary Bacon Learned, was associated with the Woman's Board of Missions of the Interior.
