Abschied von Wien was written in 1938 while Blume was in Silver Lake, California. Blume's 1985 autobiography, translated in 1992 as A Life in Two Worlds, indicates that the play had never been performed.
Bernhard Blume (1901-1978) was a German writer and literary historian who left Germany under Nazi pressue in 1936. He taught at Mills College, Ohio State University, and served as the Kuno Francke Professor of German Art and Culture at Harvard University from 1956 to 1966. In 1966 he left Harvard for the University of California, San Diego.
