Dix (1802-1887), crusader for the mentally ill and superintendent of army nurses during the Civil War, and accompanied Alice Cunningham Fletcher (1838-1923), who as special agent for the U.S. Dept. of the Interior, apportioned tribal lands among the Winnebagos of Nebraska and the Nez Percés of Idaho.
