Indianapolis High School was founded in 1864 as the state's first free high school. Its name was changed to Shortridge High School in 1898 in honor of school superintendent Abram C. Shortridge.

Founded in 1864 as Indianapolis High School, Shortridge was the state's first free high school. Its name was changed to Shortridge in 1898 in honor of Superintendent Abram C. Shortridge who began the school's tradition of excellence. From the 1930s on, Shortridge was affected by the socio-economic changes in the community, leading to its closing in 1981.
