Wheeler-Voegelin, Erminie, 1903-1988
Variant namesAmerican anthropologist, ethnohistorian, and folklorist; founder of the American Society for Ethnohistory, editor of Ethnohistory (1954-1964), and director of the Great Lakes-Ohio Valley Research Project at Indiana University (1956-1969).
Wheeler-Voegelin's fieldwork and research during the 1930's and 1940's focused on the Ojibwa, Shawnee, and Tubatulabal Indians. At Indiana University, the research project she directed created research reports and other materials to provide "historical background for the geographical areas ceded by treaties that were the subject of litigation heard by the Indian Claims Commission."
