William Charles Macready was one of the most highly regarded actors of his day and an innovative and influential theatre manager. Born in London, he aspired to be a lawyer, but became an actor to support his father. He quickly made a name for himself playing a succession of melodramatic villains, and graduated to great success in Shakespearian roles. As a theatre manager, his innovations include group rehearsals, the use of historically accurate costumes, and reviving the original versions of Shakespeare's plays in preference to the heavily amended contemporary versions.
