Wood was born on 21 August 1932 in Syracuse, NY. He earned a bachelor of arts in 1954 from Cornell University then spent two years in the army. In 1966 he received a masters of divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary and, in 1973, completed a masters in sacred theology and Old Testament at Nashota House Seminary in Nashota, Wi. He began work as the chaplain of the St. Alban's Episcopal Church, which is located on the LSU campus, in 1970.
