George DeFrees Shepardson was born in 1864 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He received his B.A. from Denison University (1885), his M. A. in languages from Cornell University (1888), and a Mechanical Engineering degree in 1889. During his sabbatical year in 1912, he earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University. In 1891, Dr. Shepardson accepted a position at the University of Minnesota, where he remained until his death in 1926. He published over 125 articles and several textbooks, and was largely responsible for guiding the development of the Dept. of Electrical Engineering from a small facility to a larger MnU-IT department.
