Edward E. "Swede" Hazlett (1892-1958), a childhood friend of Dwight D. Eisenhower, grew up in Abilene, Kansas. Eisenhower credits Edward Hazlett with convincing him to apply for an appointment to the Naval Academy, and when not accepted, his application to West Point. Hazlett had a career in the Navy while Eisenhower pursued his in the Army. Ill health ended Hazletts active military career in 1939. Hazlett was a Professor of Military Science for the Navy at University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill from 1944 until his retirement in 1946.
