Robert Montgomery Bird was an American author and dramatist. Born in New Castle, Delaware, Bird experienced hardship as a child, but graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and became a physician. His literary aspirations led him to write poetry and drama, and he experienced early success as a playwright. Bird went on to write novels, specializing in frontier stories and, despite achieving both critical and popular success, struggled to earn a living as a writer. He taught briefly at the Pennsylvania Medical College, worked as an editor, and continued to write. He is perhaps best remembered for Nick of the Woods, a frontier adventure whose title character had a dual personality.

Robert Montgomery Bird was a Philadelphia author of the early nineteenth century; his works include The Gladiator and Nick of the Woods. He complemented his literary career with drawing, painting, photography, and musical composition; he was also a professor of medicine, an editor, a farmer, and a politician.
