Edmund Taylor Whittaker, born in 1873 in Southport, England, was a mathematician, astronomer and philosopher. He attended Trinity College, Cambridge, and was appointed professor of astronomy at the University of Dublin in 1906. In 1912, he was made professor of mathematics at the University of Edinburgh, holding this post for thirty-five years before retiring in 1946. After 1930, when he was received into the Roman Catholic Church, his interests turned to natural theology. He died in 1956.
