SEMATECH declared June 1, 1990, "Bob Noyce Day." The celebration was inspired by a comment that an equipment supplier had made to the San Jose Mercury News. Americans need to "change their idols, " he said. He nominated Bob Noyce "for the pedestal." SEMATECH made up T-shirts printed with the quote, Noyce's photo, and the phrase "Bob Noyce - teen idol." This was the last image of Noyce. Two days after the photo was taken he died in his sleep of a massive heart attack. He was 62 years old. [From "The man behind the microchip" by Leslie Berlin.].
