Chief justice of New Jersey and lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania.

Appointed to the Pennsylvania post by John Penn, Morris' term was marked by his clash with the Pennsylvania Assembly over its refusal to vote funds for the protection of the frontier against the French and Indians. He resigned in 1756.
