Documents the evolution of the administration of health facilites planning at Duke University Medical Center from 1952 to 1976, a period of major expansion prior to the creation of the Facilities Planning, Design and Construction Office within the Office of the Medical Center and Health System Architect. Most records in the collection are from the offices of Louis E. Swanson, chairman of the Medical Center Building Committee (1952-1976) and director of the Medical Center Planning Office (1967-1976), and Dr. Jane G. Elchlepp, the first assistant dean for planning (1965-1969). Elchlepp went on to become the first assistant vice president for health affairs planning and analyis, with primary responsibility for planning and overseeing the design of Duke Hospital North. During this period of facilities expansion, several planning studies and hospital administration analyses were commissioned from some of the premier management consulting and hospital development firms in the United States. These are foundation documents in the history of health facilities planning at Duke University.
