Secretary of State is a constitutional office elected to four-year terms by the General Assembly in joint session. The Department of State keeps all acts and resolutions adopted by the General Assembly and signed by the Governor. It is also required to keep other records as set out by statute including receiving and recording all corporate charters, receipt of all trademarks, the execution of notary commissions, and the receipt of all administrative rules and regulations. The department includes the State Election Commission, Registry of Election Finance, and the Tennessee State Library and Archives.
