German-born filmmaker Hans Richter was influential in the European avant-garde of the 1920s. His animated films 'Rhythmus 21', 'Rhythmus 23', and 'Rhythmus 25' evolved from his studies of 'rhythm in painting' with Viking Eggeling. Because the abstract shapes and colors in Richter's Dadaist films resemble Suprematist compositions, he attracted the attention and admiration of Russian painter Kazimir Malevich, whose 1927 film script for 'An artistic and scientific film: painting and the problems of the architectural approach to the new classical architectural system' bears the instruction 'for Hans Richter.' However, Richter did not attempt to realize Malevich's film until he had emigrated to the United States and completed several other films, including 'Dreams that money can buy' (1944-46) and 'Dadascope 1 and 2' (1957). In 1970 Richter began work on, but never completed, the Malevich animation.

Filmmaker; New York, N.Y.

First one-man show in 1916, the same year he joined the Dadaists. His interest in the movement of forms led him first to scroll painting and then to film. He produced his first movie in 1921 and then went on to create Dreams That Money Can Buy, with Duchamp, Ernst, Calder and Man Ray, and 8 X 8, among others.

From the description of Hans Theo Richter papers, [ca. 1914-1981]. (Unknown). WorldCat record id: 86132904
