Mercier (1922-1998) served as a tank gunner in the Army from 1942 to 1945.

After being discharged at the rank of staff sergeant, he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Mercier worked for thirty-one years at Pope and Talbot Paper Mill in Eau Claire (Wisconsin), including fifteen years as operation controller.
