Emmett Till was born in Chicago, Illinois to Louis Till (February 7, 1922-July 2, 1945) and Mamie Elizabeth Till-Mobley (born Mamie Elizabeth Carthan, November 23, 1921-January 6, 2003). In the summer of 1955 Emmett took a vacation to visit relatives near Money in the Mississippi Delta region, and help them with the cotton harvest. While there, he was accused of harassing a local white woman. A few days later, August 28, 1955, Emmett was abducted at gunpoint, brutally beaten, mutilated, and eventually shot. His body was found in the river on August 31, 1955.
