Established 1980; concerned with both folklore and material culture; issued a newsletter (under three successive titles) from 1980 to 1989; assumed editorial and distribution responsibilities in 1985 for New Jersey Folklore (an annual publication later titled New Jersey Folklife) which continued to be published in conjunction with the New Jersey Folk Festival (an annual event organized by the American Studies Department of Rutgers University) through its final issue (dated 1991, but copyrighted 1992).

Organized 1945 following folklore conferences (promoted by the New Jersey Council, New Jersey Department of Economic Development) held at Rutgers University in February and April; adopted a constitution and elected officers in May and was incorporated later in 1945; held meetings at various locations around the state through 1947; was dormant until 1950 when additional meetings were held. Officers included presidents Henry C. Beck (1945-1947), Alden Cotrell (1947) and Dan G. Hoffman (1950-1951); corresponding secretary Fred W. Jackson; recording secretary Miriam V. Studley; and treasurers Virginia S. Burnett (1945-1947) and Elizabeth R. Boyd (1947), the latter also secretary/treasurer (1950-1951).
