Richard McGarvie attended Camperdown High School and served in the Navy during World War Two. He graduated in law upon his return and also joined the Australian Labor Party. He became a QC in 1963. Later he became Chancellor of La Trobe University (1981-1992) and Governor of Victoria (1992-1997).
