Dr. John Allen (1771-1843) was a political and historical writer. In 1791 he graduated with an MD from the University of Edinburgh. In 1801, in his capacity as a doctor, he accompanied Lord Holland to Spain, and on his return to England became a regular inmate of Holland House. Although he served in 1806 as under-secretary to the commissioners for treating with America, Allen is best known for his social life at Holland House, especially as documented in his diary. He also helped Lord Holland to research the materials for his speeches; contributed 35 articles to the Edinburgh Review, especially on Spanish subjects; and an Inquiry into the Rise and Growth of the Royal Prerogative in England (1830). Allen was appointed warden of Dulwich College from 1811 to 1820, and master from that year until his death. He was also auditor of the duchy of Lancaster from 1841 until his death.

Thomas Chatterton (1752-1770) was a poet and forger of pseudo-medieval poetry. In 1769 he sent a piece called Rowley's History of England, supposedly by a medieval monk named Thomas Rowley, to Horace Walpole, hoping for Walpole's patronage. Walpole initially believed in its authenticity but, convinced by his friends of the forgery, wrote back to Chatterton declining to sponsor him, but neglecting to return Chatterton's work. Chatterton also wrote political letters, eclogues, lyrics, operas and satires, both in prose and verse. Using the pseudonym Decimus, in the vein of Junius, he wrote against such political figures as the Duke of Grafton, the Earl of Bute, and Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha. However, he was paid very little for his work, and on August 24, 1770, at age 17, he committed suicide with arsenic. It was after Chatterton's death that controversy over the Rowley manuscripts and poems began.
