Author and businessman Horace Smith was born in London to an educated, well-to-do family; he was educated at home and at the Chigwell School and the Albert House Academy. He worked as a clerk for a merchant, founded his own firm, and joined the London Stock Exchange in 1812. He also wrote novels, articles, and poetry; his best-known work is Rejected Addresses, a book of twenty-one parodies of popular poets written with his brother, James. Rejected Addresses became so extraordinarily popular and successful that even the parodied poets seemed pleased. His historical romances, in emulation of Walter Scott, were also popular. Smith was active in the literary society of his day, and had a notably close friendship with Percy Bysshe Shelley.
