Topographer Daniel Lysons received both a B.A. and M.A. at Oxford, and, having taken religious orders, became curate in Mortlake and later Putney, Surrey. It was here he began his survey of the London region, later published in four volumes, with many drawings by the author. Together with his brother, Samuel, he undertook a survey of Britain called Magna Britannia, but only six volumes were completed before Samuel's death. He also provided illustrations for other works, and published several religious works.
