A professor of economics, John Stricklin Spratt, Sr. (1902-1976) taught at San Angelo Junior College (now Angelo State University) and Southern Methodist University.

He also authored several books on economic history, such as The Niagara Falls Conference of 1914: Its Causes and Results (1928), The Road to Spindletop: Economic Change in Texas, 1875-1901 (1955), and Thurber, Texas: The Life and Death of a Company Coal Town (1986).
