Amado Chaves served as the first New Mexico Territorial Superintendent of Public Instruction, as mayor of Santa Fe, New Mexico and as a Senator to the Territorial Council in 1903. He was a friend of Charles F. Lummis.

Amado Chaves was the son of Manuel Chaves, a prominent statesman. He served as the first Superintendent of Public Instruction for the Territory of New Mexico in 1891. He was elected Mayor of Santa Fe in 1891 and served as Senator to the Territorial Council in 1903.
