Thomas Chase was the son of Anthony and Lydia (Earle) Chase of Worcestor, Ma. He began teaching philosophy, classical and English literature at Haverford College in 1855 and was named president in 1875. In 1885 he resigned due to failing health. He served on the American Committee for the revision of the Bible from 1881-1894.
