State Senator Otis James Goodwyn (1920-1973) was born in Warrior, Alabama. Following graduation from law school in 1949, Goodwyn moved to Montgomery to work for the State Department of Industrial Relations. In 1951, he began private practice with attorney Maury Smith. Goodwyn was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives in 1954, and won re- election twice. He was recognized as the outstanding freshman legislator for the 1955 session. Goodwyn served as floor leader in the House during the George Wallace administration (1963-1967). In 1966, Goodwyn was elected to the State Senate. He was chosen as President Pro Tem for the term beginning in 1967. With the accession of Lieutenant Governor Albert Brewer to the Governor's office following the death of Governor Lurleen Wallace in May of 1968, Goodwyn became first in line of succession to the Governor's office. Goodwyn was defeated for election as Lieutenant Governor in the 1970 elections. On February 1, 1971, he was hired by the Alabama Education Association as a lobbyist. Goodwyn developed amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and died following surgery for an ulcer on July 26, 1973.
