Biographical Note

Sándor Lorand was born to an Orthodox Jewish family in Kassa, Hungary, on December 2, 1892. He studied theology and philosophy at the University of University of Pressburg (now Bratislava), obtaining a Ph.D. before earning a medical degree in 1920. As a a medical student and then physician in Kosice, Czechoslovakia, Lorand was drawn to psychoanalysis, particularly the work of Sándor Ferenczi. He trained in psychoanalysis with Paul Federn and Vilma Kovach, and as a gynecologist experimented with hypnosis. He immigrated to New York in 1925, where he became a private physician and also worked at the Mental Health Clinic of Mount Sinai Hospital. Lorand taught analytical theory and technique as a supervising analyst at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute. The author of numerous papers on anxiety, perversions, and religious devotion, among other topics, in 1950 he published Clinical Studies in Psychoanalysis (New York: International Universities Press). Lorand died on Long Island, New York, on July 29, 1987.
