Theodore Fremd was born in Germany coming to the United States as a young man. He established a meat market on Purchase Street in Rye in 1886 which he operated until 1946. He served as a trustee of the Village of Rye and its president from 1913-1926. He was a member of the Rye Board of Education from 1899 to 1938, serving as president much of the time. The title, "Grand Old Man of Rye," was bestowed on him at the 1926 testimonial dinner.
