The Remeys were a prominent Burlington, Iowa family. This collection includes papers of George Collier Remey, Mary Josephine Mason Remey, William B. Remey, Edward W. Remey and Charles Mason Remey as well as papers related to Charles Mason. George Collier Remey graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1859. He was commissioned lieutenant in 1861. He participated in several Civil War battles and received numerous promotions, including a promotion to rear-admiral in 1898. Captain (U.S. Marine Corps) William B. Remey and Lt. (U.S. Navy) Edward W. Remey were his brothers. In 1873 he married Mary Josephine Mason, daughter of Charles Mason, the first chief justice of Iowa. The couple had a son, Charles Mason Remey, an architect and lecturer on architecture and the Baha'i faith.
