Huston-Tillotson College is the result of the merger of Sam Huston College and Tillotson College in 1952. Tillotson College began in 1895 as a secondary school in Austin, Tex., sponsored by the American Missionary Association of the Congregational churches; chartered in 1877 Tillotson Collegiate and Normal Institute opened 17 Jan. 1881, following the completion of Allen Hall, "the first building in the State of Texas for the higher education of Negroes"; named Tillotson College in 1909 after the Rev. George Jeffrey Tillotson, a Congregational minister and benefactor, the institution; became a junior college in 1925, a women's college in 1926, and a senior college in 1931. Samuel Huston College began in 1876 as a school founded by the Rev. George Warren Richardson, a Methodist minister, at St. Paul Methodist Episcopal Church in Dallas, Tex.; opened in Decembwer of 1887 with six students; later named after Mr. Samuel Huston, a farmer and benefactor; approved as a senior college by the state of Texas in 1926; name changes include: Andrews Normal College (1876), West Texas Conference School (1878), and Samuel Huston College (1910).
