Brigadier General (BG) Paul R. Hawley began his military service at Fort Thomas, KY. In August, 1918, he sailed for France with the 334th Infantry, serving with the 2nd Depot Division and with the Service of Supply. He returned to the United States in 1919 and was ordered to work as Surgeon for the 14th Infantry and Sanitary Inspector for the 6th Division. Hawley enrolled in the Army Medical School in Washington, DC in 1921. After several brief assignments, he was assigned as Sixth Corps Area Medical Inspector in 1923. In January 1924, he was designated as Assistant to the Philippine Department Surgeon at Manila, a position he held until 1927, when he was assigned as Chief of Medical Service at Fort Riley, KS. In August, 1929, he was appointed Chief Surgeon of United States Army troops in Nicaragua, and in September 1931, he was appointed Executive Officer of the Army Medical Center, Washington, DC. In 1934, he entered the Command and General Staff School at Fort Leavenworth, KSm and after his graduation in 1936, was appointed the Director of the Department of Administration of the Medical Field Service School at Carlisle Barracks, PA. He attended the Army War College, graduating in 1939, and became Director of the Army Extension Cours of the Medical Field Service School at Carlisle Barracks beginning in August 1939. From January to May 1941, he served as Commanding Officer, Medical Department Training Center, Camp Lee, VA. He then returned to Carlisle Barracks where we became Assistant Commandant of the Medical Field Service School until September 1941, when he was ordered to the European Theater of Operations. He served Chief Surgeon, United States Army Forces in the British Isles and European Theater of Operations. In July 1942, he was designated Chief, Medical Services, Headquarters Service of Supply, European Theater of Operations, then in January 1943 was named Chief Surgeon, European Theater of Operations. He retired from active duty in 1946.
