U.S. army officer, topographical draftsman, and painter and illustrator of Indian life.

An 1829 West Point graduate, Eastman served at Fort Crawford, Wis., and Fort Snelling, Minn., 1829-1832, as assistant instructor of drawing at West Point, 1833-1840, and again at Fort Snelling, 1841-1848. While in Minnesota, he sketched and painted many of the Indian scenes he would use when he was employed in Washington, D.C., by the government to prepare illustrations for Schoolcraft's work.
