Malin received his A.B. from Baker in 1914, his A.M. in 1916, and his Ph.D. in 1921, both from KU. He joined the faculty of KU in the Department of History in 1921, reaching full Professor status in 1938. He retired in 1963.

James C. Malin was born February 8, 1893 in Edgley, North Dakota. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Kansas in 1921, immediately joining the History faculty and remaining there until retiring in 1963. He was a pioneer in combining the subject matter of history with other disciplines. Malin died in Lawrence, Kansas on January 26, 1979.
