Ivy Compton-Burnett (June 5, 1884-August 27, 1969), a fiction writer, relied heavily on dialogue in her work. She developed a highly individualistic style of writing: no use of colons or semi-colons, exclamation marks or italics. She primarily wrote about human weaknesses and foibles of all sorts and in each of her novels the dysfunctional family emerged. She wrote 20 known and published books; most of her novels are out of print.
