Joseph Crawhall was born in 1821; became an illustrator, making colored woodblocks for books such as A collection of right merrie garlands (1864) and Olde ffrendes wyth newe faces (1883); also illustrated Garlands for North-Country anglers (1864), Chaplets from Coquet-side (1873), and Border notes & mixty-maxty (1880); became mayor of Newcastle.
